WP 3 - Study of probe sampling for particle size and chemical substance analysis

Aim of the WP

Creating non-volatile fraction of a paint aerosol for small droplets for a given spray gun and studying representative probe sampling. Quality management and test procedures for probe sampling should be developed in this WP.

Tasks

Task #Task title
T3.1

Definition of measurement protocol, design of sampling device for paint aerosol sampling

  • Homogenization of air and particle distribution in a measuring chamber by fans
  • Complete evaporation of the solvent for small droplets, heating air if necessary
  • Control the temperature and relative humidity in the chamber
  • Particle trajectory simulation to predict particle distribution and evaporation (IPA)
T3.2

Measuring particles using different aerosol instruments in the chamber

  • Representative probe sampling, particle size distribution, particle concentration
  • Estimation of measuring error because of droplet evaporation
  • Comparison of different instruments (SMPS, FMPS and ELPI)
  • Comparison of the aerosol measurement results under different working conditions
T3.3

Aerosol probe sampling for the chemical substance analysis

  • Using impactor aerosol instruments, e.g., RESPICON (Helmut Hund GmbH) for particles in micro-meter range
  • Collection and sizing of nanometer range aerosol, using ELPI or DMA operated at a fixed voltage and using nuclear filters or special probe plate
  • Effect of the  amount of sample on the elemental analysis
T3.4

Chemical substance analysis of non-volatile fraction of a paint aerosol

  • Quantitative analysis of binder contents using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) as well as Raman- and IR-characterization: determination of organic
binder and inorganic (TiO2) contents and organic (carbon black) contents.
  • Additional characterization of the non-volatile fraction by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) as well as transmission electron
microscopy (TEM) will be applied if necessary
  • Comparison of the aerosol measurement results under different conditions
