WP 4 - Characterisitic of the non-volatile fraction of paint aerosol for a given spray gun

Aim of the WP

Determination of the particle size and analysis of the chemical substances for a spray jet. Based on the research results obtained from WP2-WP3, systematic and detailed investigation on the characterization of the non-volatile fraction of paint aerosol using different industrial spray guns, water based as well as solvent based base coat with and without MNMs will be carried out. Different operating conditions for the atomization will be taken into consideration.

Tasks

Task #Task title
T4.1

Characteristic of paint overspray from water based paint with and without MNMs in the measuring chamber using handcraft spray guns

(HVLP-gun, spray cans and airless-gun)

  • Particle size distribution (mass & number) and particle concentration using SMPS etc.
  • Analysis of chemical substances using TGA, SEM, EDX, IR and TEM
T4.2

Characteristic of paint overspray from solvent based paint with and without MNMs in the measuring chamber using handcraft spray guns

  • Particle size distribution (mass & number) and particle concentration using SMPS, CLS, etc.
  • Analysis of chemical substances using TGA, SEM, EDX, IR and TEM
T4.3

Comparison of results obtained in T4.1-T4.2

T4.4

Determination of a representative non-volatile particle size distribution & aerosol penetration factor in a spray jet (IPA)

  • Probe scanning across the whole spray cone for the droplet distribution in a spray jet using Spraytec device from Malvern
  • Performing numerical simulation of droplet trajectories taking into account atomization air flow and droplet evaporation
  • Determination of the health-related particle fractions for the aerosol penetration factor in a spray jet
  • Calculating particle size distribution of the non-volatile fraction based on the experimental and simulation results
  • Comparison of a paint aerosol in a spray jet, using different spray guns and paints
